On Tuesday this week, the Year 4 boys represented Moyles Court at the U9 tag rugby tournament hosted by Park School. Taking part were 16 teams from a wide range of schools across the county so we knew competition was going to be tough from the beginning. The group rounds began and the fixture saw the team narrowly lose to Yarrells. The boys learned some lessons quickly, came together, focussed and won the next two matches against Branksome and BCS respectively. The manner that the team developed their tactics in both defense and attack was an impressive sight throughout these group stages.
Leaders on the field were Ellis and Lucas with all other boys stepping up their own games too. The group stages finished with Moyles Court second in the group and so progressing through to the Cup Knockout stages. The quarter final saw the boys drawn against Ballard School. The team played some fantastic rugby with an intensity in defense commended by spectators and staff from other schools. The boys won the match against Ballard 5 tries to 2 and were ready for the next challenge. The Semi final saw a tough fixture against St Katharines School. The scoring went down to the last play of the game with Moyles recovering from 3 tries to 1 down to score with the very last touch to finish up as 5-4 winners. The sense of achievement and pride in this win was palpable. The final saw a rematch with Yarrells from the group stages. Despite best efforts at the end of a long day, Yarrells prevailed 5 tries to 2.
Congratulations to Yarrells were offered and the Moyles team walked away as runners up out of the sixteen teams. A superb achievement. All boys were outstanding in attitude, behaviour and team working throughout the day. It was a privilege to see them take on some stiff challenges and overcome them through their strength of character and working together.
