2007 Pyrenean Mountain Experience

As part of our ongoing commitment to Outdoor Pursuits and Outdoor Learning, members of staff and pupils from Moyles Court School flew south to the peaks of the Pyrenean Mountains to enjoy a "Mountain Experience".
The visit's itinerary included not only the traditional ski resort activities of skiing and snow boarding but pushed the learning boundaries further to include: snow shoeing, gorge walking, mountaineering and climbing.
Our visit was over the Spring Half Term break. Prior to our departure there were some concerns over the quality of the snow... there was none! Two days prior to our arrival the town of Perpignan had the highest recorded temperature (ever) for this time of year and the mountains were every other colour other than white!
However, as we drove north from Barcelona airport it rained torrential rain that went on for hours. So much so that by the time we arrived at the foothills of the Pyrenees between 15cm to 40cm had fallen on the slopes.

Day One
Snow shoeing for beginners through woodlands and paths covered in virgin snow. Steep ascents (and learning curves) that culminated in a mountain refuge in "white out" conditions. Stunning views... none!
Day Two
Snow shoeing for experts! This walk was awesome. Confidence and skills levels were impressive as was the terrain covered. A simply beautiful walk which culminated with a deep snow walk around a frozen mountain lake. Lunch beside another mountain refuge followed by a staff ambush and snowball battle.

Day Three
The summit assent. We drove higher into the Canigou mountain range to walk/climb the summit of Pic de Tres Estelles (2009m).
Unfortunately the recent snow falls had made the extremely rural and potentially dangerous roads difficult to navigate. Erring on the side of safety we left the vans and proceeded on foot following the trans Pyrenean footpath (GR10).
Within minutes we were in deep snow and the snowshoes were donned to reach Col de Manet (1761m). After a well deserved lunch we continued upwards towards the snow clad peak. After reaching the first summit at 1949m the decision was made to descend because of the dense mist which was making conditions unpleasant. The snowshoe descent was punctuated with snowballing and "off path" tumbling. Another excellent day.

Day Four
Market day at Prades. The day began with a visit to the local market at nearby Prades. Plenty of time to mingle with locals, practise our French and purchase souvenirs. Some excellent and very smelly cheese was also purchased for the evening meal.
The Gorge Walk. After a light lunch we drove to the Caranca Gorge. Entering beside a small stream we began the ascent into this famous gorge. Deep, steep, exposed, scary, awesome, wicked, memorable - all describe this challenging walk. The accompanying pictures say it all.
Day Five
Ski Day. An early rise and a two hour drive up into Andorra put us ahead of most queues.
Skis were hired and we walked the short distance to the ski lifts. Snow conditions were perfect and all, of whatever ability, had excellent skiing. Progress was rapid and it was difficult to extricate the pupils at the end of the day. Tired/happy bodies collapsed in the van and promptly fell asleep for the drive back in the dark.

Day Six
At last a lie in! After yesterday's exertions we all deserved a more relaxed start (in particular some staff!). The morning activities were abseiling and climbing at the centre. Following lunch and an unexpected sunbathe, we visited the hot thermal springs at St Thomas Le Bains.
Great consternation was expressed when pupils realised that they had to wear somewhat "skimpy" French costumes not the "surf boardies" which most are accustomed to. That said, the warm volcanic/healing waters were much appreciated by the now tired bodies
Day Seven, Sadly the Final Day
An early start for the drive back to Barcelona. No delays on road or air. An uneventful drive back to school (everyone but the drivers asleep!). Eager parents await their offspring , I await my bed!!

In conclusion
A brilliant week. Great company much; laughter, excitement, challenge, teamwork, personal achievement.
Memories for a lifetime.
